How your words can change you world
My life went from wishing things would happen, to things actually happening. My attitude stopped sucking (9 out of 10 I would say but don’t ask my husband!), and I began to see a transformation in my life I never thought possible.
And you know what changed? My words.
“Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit - you choose.” Proverbs 18:21 (MSG)
Our words have power. And you get to choose each day what words come out of your mouth.
If you were to come to my home, and enter my bathroom you would see my mirror plastered in sticky notes. Written on them are my daily confessions/affirmations. Below is a photo of me from August 31, 2016 posing with my daily confessions.
As I get ready each morning I make it a point to speak each of these confessions over myself out loud. Not in my head. Out loud.
There is something powerful that happens when you speak something with passion!
Did I always believe each confession? Absolutely not. In fact, these were all things I was believing God for. But after saying them for over two years, I have no doubt in my heart about any of my confessions.
- I do believe I’m blessed and Highly Favored.
- I do believe I am His Righteousness and that His Favor surrounds me like a shield
- I do believe that I will walk in the manifestation of every dream that I’ve had.
If you look closely at my photo you’ll see I wrote, “Spring up O’ Baby” because I was believing God to get pregnant. I wrote and began that confession in August 2016, and by October 2016 I was expecting my little Killian. Coincidence? No, I believe I created my reality.
Here are a few steps you can begin in shaping your world with your words
1. Think before you speak
Be slow to speak because not everything on your mind needs to be said and not every feeling needs to be vocalized. It’s easy to complain, it’s easy to just say what’s on your mind. But think about the impact it will have. One thing that my favorite speaker, Terri Savelle Foy, said was that if you ended every sentence with “and that’s just how I want it” how would that affect your words?
Example: “ugh, I’m having a terrible day..and that’s just how I want it”
Makes you want to be more careful with your words, right?
How do you want it?
2. Declare by faith
What do you want your life to look like? What are you believing God for?
Begin to speak those things that are not as though they already are (Romans 4:17)
If you are having a bad day, declare that your day is blessed and that your joy comes from the Lord.
If the report from the doctor comes back unfavorable, declare that you walk in good health because by His stripes you are healed.
Are you expecting a promotion? Declare it!
Are you expecting to be out of debt? Speak it!
3. Believe it
Sure, starting to do the first two steps will be uncomfortable if you’ve never done them. But put your doubt aside and believe! Don’t rely on your own ability, but rely on God’s ability to fulfill His promise! His Word says in Isaiah 55:11, that His Word does not return to us void!
You have the power to create a reality maybe you only dreamed of, but your words have kept you back. Today, I encourage you to be mindful of every word that comes out of your mouth so that you can live the life you were designed for.
